EMAIL YOUR COUNCILLORS TODAY TO SHOW SOLIDARITY WITH PALESTINE

Act now to take meaningful action and send the below email to your local County Councillors today. The more momentum we can build, the more our government is unable to ignore the calls of its people to take action to stop the genocide in Gaza and Palestine. See template and list of Councillors below.

A chara,

I'm contacting you as your local constituent to ask you to take meaningful action now to show solidarity with Palestinians in the face of the genocide being committed by Israel. We are asking you to represent your constituency and its people who continue to call for solidarity with Palestine and for impactful action to be taken in response to our collective condemnation of Israel through the support of the peaceful Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

The death toll in Palestine has surpassed 14,000 since October 7th with over 5,600 children killed as a result of Israeli bombardment and estimated thousands trapped under the rubble. In the words of our Minister for Education Simon Harris, this is a war on children. As reported by Save The Children, the number of children killed in Gaza since October 7th, has surpassed the annual number of children killed in world conflict zones since 2019.The number of injured has exceeded  25,000, the catastrophic situation is compounded by targeted attacks on medical facilities, and now the Gaza health ministry has reported that all hospitals in Northern Gaza are out of service.

The illegal blockade of water, fuel and electricity as well as the destruction of sanitation infrastructure, has resulted in sewage flooding the streets in Gaza, causing the UN to sound the alarm for the risk of severe disease and outbreaks of cholera amidst this current humanitarian catastrophe.

The number of Palestinians killed in the West Bank since 7th October accounts for 47 percent of all Palestinian fatalities in the West Bank in 2023.  Thousands of men, women, and children have been arbitrarily detained in Israeli detention in inhumane conditions, with cases reported of “horrific torture and degradation” by Amnesty International.

We can no longer stand by as complacent witnesses to the horror, death, and devastation being wrought by the apartheid Israeli government and its litany of war crimes and breaches of International law. There must be consequences.

In November, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown (DLR) county councilors set a precedent for county councils to respond with action. We ask you to follow their example set forward this month, in which a majority of DLR county councillors voted in favour of formally supporting the “Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement” (BDS) against apartheid Israel, praising the motion as “a peaceful campaign for change”. Last week, South Dublin County Council passed a motion to fly the Palestinian flag outside of the County Council offices, a gesture celebrated by people across the country.

Dublin Became the first European capital to endorse BDS for Palestinian rights in 2018, by dropping tech company Hewlett Packard for its complicity in Israeli apartheid, promising to discontinue all its business contracts with the BDS-targeted Hewlett Packard (HP) branded companies and spin-offs, including DXC Technology.

There are two bills currently before the Dail that need to be enacted as a matter of urgency. — the Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Bill 2018 and the Illegal Israeli Settlements Divestment Bill 2023. We call on you to add your voice as our County Council in support of this bill to stop the Israeli government from profiting off the Palestinian people during this genocide.

We ask you to represent the people as we demand a withdrawal of the diplomatic status of the Israeli Ambassador in light of the litany of war crimes that Israel continues to commit. We are aware that the last motion saw 55 votes to expel the ambassador, this number has jumped from 7 TDs just a few weeks ago. Join the call, as our County Council for an end to Ireland’s relationship with this genocidal regime.

In Summary, we are asking you to represent your constituents by taking the following actions:

  • Call for the County Council to formally support the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions Movement, similar to the successful motion in DLR County Council.
  • Call for The Palestinian flag to be flown above the County Council building, following the example of South County Dublin Council, to show solidarity with Palestine, as previously done for Ukraine.
  • Express your endorsement and call for the enactment of the Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Bill 2018 and the Illegal Israeli Settlements Divestment Bill 2023 as a matter of urgency.
  • Demand the withdrawal of the diplomatic status of the Israeli Ambassador and sanctions on Israel.
  • Become an Apartheid Free Zone by divesting and discontinuing County Council business contracts with any companies, such as HP or DXC Technology, given their complicity in Israel’s egregious violations of Palestinian human rights. For a list of divestment targets see bdsmovement.net

I look forward to your response and I am hopeful that you will agree to support these urgent calls from your constituents and place yourself on the right side of history.

Is mise,  le meas,
